Launched at 7 July 2016, Pokémon Go is a success augmented reality game. Although it was only launched only for USA users but worldwide users are downloading the APK from other sources other than Apple App Store and Google Playstore. Me, playing Ingress instead of Pokemon Go.
What is Ingress?
Briefly explained, in this world we are divided into two factions that aim to claim popular spots which called as portal. Each factions has to claim portals as many as possible and maintain it from other faction. That’s why at the very first gameplay, you should choose which faction you take side on.
More information how to play, how to claim, how to defend, and etc, explained in video below.
Ingress and Pokémon Go
Both are developed by same company, Niantic Labs, formerly built as internal startup in Google and becoming an independent company at October 2015. Both are having the same map database, which previously all of those point of interests were collected by Ingress players for about 3 years. That’s why they have similarities on display but different game play.
But they are separate applications. Any future changes by Ingress players would not change anything on Pokémon Go. You may refer the map database but it has no any relations to Pokémon.
Augmented Reality (AR) vs Virtual Reality (VR)
When Oculus Rift launched, VR is very happening, followed by other gear such as Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, Playstation VR. The cheapest one you could get was Google Cardboard. I am not impressed.
Other gear from Microsoft is interesting (for me), called Microsoft HoloLens, is AR headset. I do not know whether Google Glass is able to be categorised as AR headset or not, but I am imagining that if AR game is played using Google Glass. It would be very awesome to have.
Wouldn’t it awesome able to play Ingress / Pokémon Go using Google Glass?
What is your favorite AR/VR game?
